There were plenty of driving factors that encouraged me to plan a trip to Cancun. For one, it was because Cancun is truly the heart of the Mexican Caribbean. Beyond that, I was attracted to Cancun as a travel destination because:
Cancun has amazingly clean and clear waters and an unparalleled coastline — perfect for a laid-back day near the shore or enjoying water-based activities. Stay tuned to learn about the watersport I tried (and LOVED).
It has great weather and warm, sunny days almost all year long. Rejoice, sunworshippers!
There are high-end resorts and hotels offering luxurious stays.
The cuisine of Cancun is diverse and sensational; you can find delicious bites to munch on every step of the way.
There are plenty of opportunities for exciting nightlife and partying.
Cancun is quite literally in the heart of the Mayan Empire and is surrounded by ancient ruins.
Once I did my research, I knew Cancun had to be on my bucket list. And when I recently ticked it off with my husband, I couldn’t help but hop on here to share my experience with you. Keep reading to learn all about it!
You can fly directly into Cancun through the Cancun International Airport, and airport shuttles (private or group) can pick you up from the airport and drop you at your hotel. To get around the city, you can conveniently take a taxi — they’re all over the place. You can also rent a car; there are surprisingly affordable deals, costing as little as $15 a day. (Contact us, if you are interested in booking a car.) But, the most affordable option is taking a bus to move around the city. Hubby and I rode the bus, it cost $1 per person each way. Just note, no air conditioning in these buses.
For our stay, we chose the Royalton CHIC Cancun in a Sunset View Suite — and we couldn’t have been happier about our decision.
We typically book oceanfront rooms, waking up to the view of rushing water. As much as we love watching the waves, we knew we were ready for a change this time around. And so, we opted for a sunset view suite.
As the sun set behind the beautiful Mexican skyline, we got to snag mesmerizing vistas of vibrant oranges and reds. Every evening, the sunset restored a sense of peace and calmness and encouraged us to pause and practice gratitude.
The rooms were nice and spacious, the bathrooms were clean, and the staff was friendly and attentive. The cherry on the cake was the delicious food. Personally, we were huge fans of the pizza (it was made-to-order).
Cancun is packed with things to do, so much that you can easily make every day in Cancun a unique and fun experience. Here are some of the activities we tried and thoroughly enjoyed:
The cenote choices in Cancun are diverse and a must to experience during your stay. A cenote is a stunning work of nature — it is formed when a cave collapses and the resulting site is filled with rainwater. During our excursion, we went to three different cenotes where we experienced various levels of water clarity. Be sure to explore the various cenote tours in Cancun and choose one before you go!
Cancun offers plenty of opportunities for watersports, including swimming, snorkeling, and scuba diving... I experienced snorkeling as a part of my cenote excursion, delving deep into the water to make new marine friends. As a claustrophobic and someone who doesn’t swim, I fairly enjoyed the activity — with a life vest, of course. 😅
Exploring Mexico’s culture and history is best done by a day trip to Chichen Itza. The mind-blowing collection of monuments and temples walked us years down in history, while the stop at a cenote on the way back was a great ending to the trip (I didn’t take a swim this time, though).
Chichen Itza is a two-hour drive from Cancun, and while you can rent a car and go by yourself, you can conveniently join a tour, too, which is what we did.
Experience an adrenaline rush at Adventure Parks. Cancun is packed with adventure parks (XCaret and Xplor in particular), featuring beach coves, jungle hikes, cultural shows, zip lines, and plenty of other thrilling activities.
Party the night away in Cancun’s clubs and tourist bars. Zona Hotelera (Hotel Zone) is home to plenty of places where you can dance the night away — and enjoy a drink (or three), of course. Check out Coco Bongo Cancun for a unique party experience.
Enjoy a laid-back day at the islands — Isla Mujeres and Isla Contoy. These are located just off the coast at Cancun and offer a peaceful experience amidst stunning vistas.
Go wild at The Rio Secreto Nature Reserve. This is an underground cave where you can spend the day swimming and cooling off.
Tan under the sun on Playa Delfines, a public beach. This is a tranquil and gentle beach where you can enjoy the waters or simply lay on the sandy shore.
The climate of Cancun is nice and warm — and fairly predictable. On average, it hovers around 83° F (or 28° C). December through April is the best time to visit; it is clear and warm but sees an influx of tourists. If you’re looking for a more laid-back, peaceful environment (and better prices), opt for the period between May and October. However, this is also the time when the hurricane season peaks, so you should consider getting travel insurance.
We headed back home after our luxurious stay in the city and can’t wait to fly back already. Whether you’re a solo traveler, a watersport lover, traveling with family, or looking for a romantic getaway, Cancun has a little something in store for everyone.
